Citizens State Bank, Navasota

2009 AIA Brazos Citation Award

Programmatic Requirements

The bank which has been operating since 1925, has its main office in Somerville, and currently operates banking branches in Caldwell, Snook, Deanville, Brenham, and Navasota. In July 2007, Citizens State Bank expanded to serve the Grimes County market. The branch set up a temporary facility at its property located along State Highway 90, the future home of its permanent facility. In 2002, BBA Architects were named as architects for the addition to and renovation of the existing branch in Brenham. After the success of the new architectural brand identity for the bank at the Brenham location, BBA Architects were hired once again to design a new branch facility in Navasota, Texas.

Design Solutions

With the recently opened Navasota branch, BBA Architects evolved the architectural brand even further by incorporating sustainability concepts into the design process. In addition to using local stone, low VOC building materials and xeriscape landscaping, the main nod to sustainability is in the use of a rainwater harvesting system. The rainwater harvesting system – here in the form of a cistern – not only supplies water to irrigate the landscape and cut down on the consumption of water; but it also pays homage to the rainwater cisterns of the rural Texas past.
